Sky Boats
Sky Boats
alkyd on steel
2022

Created as a permanent art installation for the parks at Alamar, Avondale, AZ. A boat found on dry land, especially desert land, evokes thoughts of water and the immediate surrounding environment. In this case the boats are familiar forms, they look like folded paper boats that bring forth happy childhood memories, and their unlikely place in the desert is within a park on a land that carries with it history and future possibilities. But these boats don’t appear to be made of paper, their painted surfaces look like blue skies and white fluffy clouds, as though sheets of paper were plucked from the sky above, brought down to earth, and folded into these forms. Their placement in the park is playful and whimsical, I want residents of Alamar to discover them and feel the excitement of boundless possibility and exploration. Together the boats represent a journey. They stand for the three rivers in the area, as well as the past, present and future of this landscape.
